The 21st GADEST: thank you!
The 21st International Conference on Gettering and Defect Engineering in Semiconductor Technology (GADEST) was held on San Servolo Island, in the Venetian lagoon, from 27 September to 2 October 2026.
We would like to thank all the participants, more than 130 colleagues from 21 countries, for the way they took part in the conference. The quality of the talks and posters, the lively discussions and the friendly atmosphere made it a very successful week. As in the GADEST tradition, the scientific sessions were complemented by moments spent together, where many of the conversations started during the sessions continued: the poster sessions over dinner, the excursion to Burano and the social dinner, with a great concert by the University of Padova Big Band. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did, that we kept the spirit of the "GADEST family", and that we will meet again at future editions.
Our thanks go to:
- all the speakers and poster presenters, including the plenary and invited speakers, and the session chairs, for the quality of the scientific programme;
- the Executive Committee and the International Programme Committee, for guiding the series and reviewing the abstracts;
- the jury of the Voronkov awards, and GlobalWafers-MEMC for supporting them;
- our sponsors, whose support made the conference possible;
- the Department of Physics and Astronomy "Galileo Galilei" of the University of Padova, CNR-IMM, the University of Bologna and the University of Milano-Bicocca, for their support;
- The staff in San Servolo, for hosting us and for the care with which they looked after the meals, the excursion and the social dinner;;
- our local team, whose work behind the scenes made the week run smoothly.
This was the first GADEST without Hermann Grimmeiss and Vladimir Voronkov. We thank Teimuraz Mtchedlidze and Robert Falster for the tributes to their memory.
In memory of Vladimir Voronkov, and thanks to the support of GlobalWafers-MEMC Electronic Materials, GADEST 2026 established two awards for young presenters. The Young Researcher Award went to Andrea Pulici (CNR-IMM) and the Young Student Award to Afonso de Cerdeira Oliveira (L-NESS, Politecnico di Milano). Congratulations to both! More details are on the YSA and YRA Voronkov prizes page.
We took some photos during the conference, which you can find on the page GADEST 2026 in pictures. The page is accessible only to registered participants: please log in with the account you used for your registration. If you would like any photo of yourself to be removed, please write to gadest2026@dfa.unipd.it and we will take care of it. Please also do not share the photos in open-access locations without the consent of the people in the picture.
The final Book of Abstracts is available on the page Abstract Book and Instructions for Presenters.
The location of the next GADEST has not yet been decided. It will be announced on the general GADEST webpage, www.gadest.org.
Arrivederci, see you in 2028!
Your GADEST 2026 team
Scope
Since 1985, the GADEST conference series has provided a high-level international forum for scientists and engineers working in the field of defects in semiconductors, materials science, and device technology. GADEST fosters close interaction between academia and industry, addressing both fundamental research and technological applications.

The GADEST conference is devoted to semiconductor defect physics, materials science and device technology and focuses on both fundamental as well as technological aspects of defects, growth, processing and modelling of electronic materials and devices, ranging from microelectronics to photovoltaics.
