Description
The gravitational backreaction of the absence of spacetime supersymmetry in string theory has dramatic effects, forbidding the tree-level flat Minkowski and requiring new vacuum solutions. A similar fate is expected for localized sources: brane solutions must change drastically.
In this talk, I will discuss ongoing work on the gravity description of branes in non-supersymmetric tachyon-free ten-dimensional strings, emphasizing the emergence of universal asymptotic behavior.
I will also describe an alternative viewpoint in which branes are embedded in the shifted vacuum.
