Description
Peculiar velocities have emerged as essential tools in modern cosmology and astrophysics, playing a key role in the study of current cosmic tensions, such as the dipole tension and the Hubble tension. A particularly compelling application lies in the use of Type Ia supernova (SNIa) luminosity distances to probe the underlying large-scale matter distribution. In this talk, I will show that the observed luminosity-distance multipoles effectively encode the expansion and shear of the local velocity field, enabling the reconstruction of the ellipsoidal kinematics of the Laniakea supercluster.
