I will deal with the SM-CI (Shell Model with Configuration Interaction) description of nuclei
belonging to the regions of deformation occurring at (or near) the potential neutron and/or proton
magic numbers N=20, 28, 40 and 50. Among others 32Mg, 60Ca, 62Ti, 62Cr, 78Ni, and 84−86Mo. In
this context, I will discuss shape coexistence, shape mixing and the limits of the concept of nuclear
shape. Finally I will briefly introduce the DNO-SM approach, developed by D, Dao and F. Nowacki,
and their impressive results for superheavy 254No.
