MICADO will be the first instrument available at the ELT. Together with the MORFEO adaptive optics system being built by INAF, it will achieve unprecedented resolution at near-infrared wavelengths, providing diffraction limited imaging, astrometry, high contrast imaging, and slit spectroscopy. I will describe the MICADO project in the context of the ELT, indicating some ways that it differs from a VLT instrumentation project. And I will give a brief outline of the instrument's main features, highlighting some technical innovations. The second part will focus on the science that MICADO can do, and I will describe a few cases that exploit its various observing modes.
