Description
Creep is a slow plastic deformation process of materials realized
at stress levels below the yield strength. The time evolution of the strain rate
under constant stress exhibits three distinct stages. Interestingly, despite the
scale difference, they resemble some power laws observed in geological
phenomena such as earthquakes and landslides. One may thus wish to find
a common mechanism in materials rupture and geological catastrophic
phenomena. Here we analyze a simple model for creep failure of disordered
solids and seek for any connection and implication to earthquakes and landslides.
