Planetary Atmospheres: Fundamental physics and remote sensing principles

All planets in the solar system, along with many moons and dwarf planets, are graced with atmospheres. Despite radically different surface pressures and completely different compositions, all atmospheres are governed by the same basic physical principles. Similarly, the fundamental tool of remote sensing can be used to determine these diverse properties. This seminar will cover the physics of atmospheric structure, radiative transfer, the greenhouse effect, as well as atmospheric source and loss processes. These topics will be explained using case studies from remote sensing observations.
