Description

Abstract: Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are powered by gas accreting onto supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies. AGN play important roles in our Universe, growing & merging supermassive black holes and feeding back on  their host galaxies. AGN have been studied in the electromagnetic domain for many decades, but  remain poorly constrained. With the opening of the gravitational-wave (GW) window on the Universe by LIGO-Virgo, we have a new opportunity to probe AGN via the properties of mergers that can happen within them. I'll outline what we think we know about the AGN channel, where the big unknowns are and how we can use LIGO-Virgo as a machine for reverse-engineering AGN.
