Description
The study of the stars evolving through the asymptotic
giant branch (AGB) has gained significant interest from the
international community over the last decades, owing to their
role as efficient pollutants of the interstellar
medium. They are believed to have a played a significant
role in different contexts, ranging from the formation
of multiple populations in globular clusters, to the
dust production rate of galaxies.
In this colloquium we discuss how the advent of the JWST has
further raised the interest towards these objects, allowing
the observations of the faint end of the main sequences of globular
clusters, where the different stellar populations leave a clear
imprinting, and the sampling of the evolved stellar populations of
galaxies until the boundary of the Local Group, and possible beyond.
