Quantum computers are advancing quickly, but solving practical problems requires higher-scale architectures and more efficient algorithms. One promising approach is to replace qubits with qudits, quantum systems with more than two levels. Trapped ions suit this approach well, since lasers can control many internal levels of each ion. Even so, entangling operations between qudits remain challenging. In this work, we consider a native qudit version of the Mølmer–Sørensen gate, the standard entangling gate for trapped ions, in which several optical transitions are driven at the same time on each ion. In this setup, the presence of cross-talks on the induced AC Stark shifts of each transition make gate calibration especially challenging. We present a calibration protocol that corrects these and other systematic errors using only quantities that can be measured in the experiment, without full process tomography.
