Description
The new generation of all-sky surveys is pushing astronomy into the low-surface-brightness regime, where the relics of galaxy mass assembly are preserved. In this context, ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs), among the faintest and most diffuse galaxies known, provide key tests of the ΛCDM paradigm and the baryonic counterparts of low-mass dark matter halos. Recent deep imaging surveys have significantly expanded the census of UDGs, showing that they account for ~5–8% of the galaxy population. <br>In this talk I would like to i) briefly review the state-of-the art on UDGs’ science, from both observational and theoretical sides, providing how much this field of research improved thanks to the advances in instrument developments, ii) illustrate the groundbreaking results we are obtaining by two large projects that I am leading: 1) Exploring the extreme universe: a preview of the galaxy Structure to be Unveiled from the Next geneRatIon aStronomical survEys (SUNRISE), focused on the detection and analysis of UDGs from deep imaging surveys, and follow-up integral-field spectroscopy from 2) Looking into the faintEst WIth MUSE (LEWIS).
