DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Stefano Trezzi (Institut de Ciències del Cosmos\, U
niversitat de Barcelona)\n\nIt has recently been understood that the near-
horizon geometry of near-extremal black holes undergoes large quantum fluc
tuations\, signaling a breakdown of semiclassical gravity. Remarkably\, th
ese large quantum gravity effects are controllable and happen at curvature
s far below the Planck scale.I will describe three ways of probing these l
arge quantum fluctuations. First\, black holes sufficiently close to extre
mality become transparent to low-frequency electromagnetic and gravitation
al radiation of fixed helicity\, due to a spin-induced energy gap that for
bids absorption below a frequency threshold. Second\, this gap modifies th
e Danielson–Satishchandran–Wald decoherence effect: the decoherence ra
te induced by near-extremal black holes on quantum superpositions in their
exterior can vanish identically\, and even above the gap\, coherence exce
eds semiclassical predictions. Third\, I will discuss the quantum deformab
ility of near-extremal black holes—their quantum Love numbers—as a fur
 ther probe of this structure.\n\nhttps://indico.dfa.unipd.it/event/1847/
