CERN LPCC EP-LHC Seminar : "Gaining access to new physics via data scouting in the High-Level Trigger at CMS"

Europe/Rome
Description
The CMS high-level trigger (HLT) information is typically used to make real-time decisions on whether to store the full event record for offline analysis. In an alternative approach called Scouting, only the HLT information is stored for all events, generating a higher-rate datastream with coarser physics content. This talk reviews how this data stream is defined, recorded, and analysed to search for new physics phenomena in previously inaccessible phase space. A special focus lies on the Run-3 period, where improvements to the scouting system enable new results, pushing the frontier of searches for new physics and high-rate precision analysis.
