 r grand-canonicalconditions has provided the experimental evidence for the
 simultaneous occurrence of macroscopic fluctuations and phase coherenceof 
 the condensate. The observation of these two features\, against aconsolida
 ted tradition which wants the fluctuations to be pathological(grand-canoni
 cal catastrophe) and incompatible with spontaneoussymmetry breaking\, call
 s for a comprehensive rethinking of theapproach to the problem. In this ta
 lk we consider the uniform idealgas in a box and we present an alternative
  conceptual framework. Weshow that the usually-employed Bogoliubov quasi-a
 verage constructionfails to reproduce the broken-symmetry state. The obser
 ved featuresare accounted for by a different pattern of spontaneous symmet
 rybreaking\, characterised by condensation of fluctuations andlong-range c
