Description
Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) is increasingly in high demand in the modern era from different public agencies due to the rapid congestion, commercialisation, and the unfortunate militarisation of space around Earth. Historically, the Asiago Observatory has hosted facilities dedicated to SST activities since the birth of space colonisation at the end of the fifties of the last century (Rosino & Mammano, 1961). Our group continues this tradition through the implementation of SST capabilities to the OAPD telescopes within a specific ASI–INAF agreement (running until 2029). The primary objective of this work package is to assess the current limitations and future development of innovative wide-field optical systems, including the evaluation of their scientific and operational impact, with the aim of enabling their optimal exploitation. In this framework, we are conducting optical observations of resident space objects to characterise their dynamics, attitude, and composition. Photometric, spectroscopic, and polarimetric measurements are being collected as part of ongoing observational campaigns. In this seminar, we will present an overview of our activities and discuss the results from the initial two-year campaign.
