Description
The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) is a dedicated facility for the observation of transient astronomical events at the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) in La Silla, Chile. It is a single-object spectrograph designed with a flexible scheduling system to enable rapid response observations. SOXS provides simultaneous spectral coverage in the UV–VIS (350–850 nm) and near-infrared (800–2000 nm) wavelength ranges, with an average resolving power of R ≈ 4500 for a 1″ slit. In addition, the instrument includes imaging capabilities in the visible wavelength regime.

Following integration, testing, and successful preliminary acceptance at INAF–OAPD, SOXS was shipped to La Silla in January 2025 and installed at the NTT. Nighttime commissioning is currently ongoing, and the instrument will be ready for operations soon. In this talk, I present the instrument (primarily from an instrumentation perspective), its capabilities, first light, and a status update on ongoing work.
