Monitoring neurochemical activity within the living brain is essential for advancing diagnostic tools and treatment strategies for neurological disorders. To this end, nanostructured optical fiber probes have recently gained attention as a promising approach to detect neurochemicals in situ through surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. In this presentation, I will review the state of the art and describe a versatile method that enables scalable nano-patterning of optical fibers employing size-controlled gold nanoparticles produced with atmospheric-pressure plasma jet synthesis.
