Description

In this talk, I will study the symmetry structure of 5d gauge theories with su(N) gauge algebra. After reviewing the Abelian case, I will investigate the consequences of the mixed 't Hooft anomaly between the electric 1-form symmetry and the U(1) instantonic 0-form symmetry of the SU(N) theory. Upon gauging the electric symmetry, one gets the PSU(N) theory, in which the instantonic symmetry is extended by a Z_N factor, generated by a condensation defect of the magnetic 2-form symmetry. As such, the extension does not act on pointlike operators but rather on linked 't Hooft surfaces. Finally, I will discuss a similar extension mechanism in the supersymmetric case, focusing on the enhanced instantonic symmetries of the superconformal UV completions of N=1 SU(2) and SO(3) Super-Yang-Mills.
